Better than Botox – Facial Rejuvenation with Acupuncture

Word is spreading that there is something else out there which helps you look younger – and not an injection needle or a surgeon's knife in sight!  A select few of the "people in the know" have discovered that a qualified Acupuncturist who has undergone additional specialist training in Cosmetic Acupuncture holds the secret to younger-looking skin in their hands.

It all started in February 2009 when the Channel 4 Programme "Ten Years Younger" sent one of the ladies who was undergoing a makeover to a Cosmetic Acupuncturist instead of a surgeon.  The results were remarkable!  Since then, various reports have appeared in the media which have sung the praises of Acupuncture as a more natural – and more effective as it is longer-lasting – alternative to Botox or surgery.

Gerda Ankenbauer-Spetch of Healing the Whole You is one such Acupuncturist who has been specially trained in Cosmetic Acupuncture.  She is also a member of Cosmetic Acupuncture UK.

The method for Facial Rejuvenation she was taught by Radha Thambirajah, author of the book "Cosmetic Acupuncture – A Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach to Cosmetic and Dermatological Problems", employs far fewer needles than were used on the TV programme.  Always keen to know what it is that she is recommending to her patients, Gerda has herself undergone Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments on her face, administered by one of her friends and colleagues.

So, what happens during a Facial Rejuvenation Treatment?

The treatment starts out with anaesthetic cream being applied to the areas of the patient's face where the needles will be inserted.  This should mean that the treatment will be painless, although a slight tingling may be felt afterwards.

The cream needs about 20 minutes to take effect, during which time the patient has a treatment of the relevant body points which will support the effectiveness of the facial acupuncture.  Then, ultrafine single-use sterile needles are applied to the face where the lifting and smoothing effect is required.  These needles will stay in place for about 30 minutes and will be manipulated at regular intervals to help achieve the desired results.

During a demonstration of Cosmetic Acupuncture Gerda attended, a patient had her eyebrows lifted by about 2 mm within 10 minutes.

What Do Patients Say?

Gerda can personally verify that even a single treatment is effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines but a course of 8 – 10 treatments is usually required to give results which may be equivalent to a facelift.

As one of Gerda's patients said, "I was a bit apprehensive about having needles in my face but I needn't have worried as it was painless.  After just one treatment, the lines between my eyebrows and my crows' feet were visibly reduced.  My skin felt much firmer and fresher and friends and family have commented that I am looking radiant.  I am a convert to Cosmetic Acupuncture and I would recommend Gerda to anyone!"
